Nature Preserves

"To waste, to destroy our natural resources, to skin and exhaust the land instead of using it so as to increase its usefulness, will result in undermining in the days of our children the very prosperity which we ought by right to hand down to them amplified and developed." ~ Theodore Roosevelt

The importance of preserving healthy natural spaces cannot be understated. They bring so much value to communities and provide wildlife with natural habitat. With continual housing and business development in populated areas, people are seeking parks and natural spaces for recreation and relaxation. There is nothing quite like a quiet walk in nature to soothe the mind and calm down the nervous system.

Nature preserves provide protection for native plants and animals that may otherwise lose their home due to environmental factors. Wetlands in particular offer economic benefits by helping to protect communities against flooding and shoreline erosion as they buffer land from storms. Water quality is also improved as the wetlands work like kidneys by filtering sediment and removing impurities from surface water.

Wildlife habitat is essential for the survival of species. Nature preserves provide the essentials of food, water, cover, and space for wildlife to thrive. Healthy natural spaces offer opportunities for nature lovers of all ages to walk, hike, or just sit and enjoy the beauty of their surroundings. Photography and keeping a journal are great ways to capture, record, and study the wonders of nature.

"An early morning walk is a blessing for the whole day." ~Henry Thoreau

The Nature Conservancy is an international organization working to protect our planet through conservation practices. Their work helps to protect natural landscapes that harbor the diversity of plant and animal life on earth. They are located in all 50 United States, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, India, Mexico, Hong Kong, and Indonesia. They welcome us to join them and explore the places they protect. If you're in the area looking for a memorable outdoor experience. I highly recommend a visit to the 276-acre Kent Island Terrapin Nature Preserve and Park. Entry is free, there is ample parking, dogs are welcome, and there are clean family-friendly restrooms with changing stations next to the ranger station. You can spend the day walking, hiking, biking, fishing, and making memories. This location is ideal for a homeschool field trip as a family or with a group. There are marked trail ways and a loop that goes through a wildflower meadow, wetlands, the shore, and woodlands. Moreover, there is plenty of space to explore, engage in nature study, educational activities, picnic, play games, and relax on the shore of the Chesapeake Bay.

“There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar:
I love not man the less, but Nature more.”
~Lord Byron

Spending Time With Nature

"A walk in nature walks the soul back home." ~Mary Davis   These very words came to mind yesterday as I hiked along the trails of Calvert Cliffs State Park located in Lusby, Maryland. When I arrived around noon it was a pleasant 66°f with sunshine and a light breeze. Much of the Red Trail is tree lined and provides ample shade with a few open sky views alongside protected wetlands to and from the beach. Calvert Cliffs State Park Beach Pink Mountain Laurel blossoms brightened the landscape as turtles sunned on logs surrounded by water lily pads and their blooms. Bird songs and frog croaks filled the air with nature's praise. It was an absolute delight to the senses!  Mountain Laurel Blossoms Eastern Painted Turtle Spending time in nature offers many benefits for our health. Woodlands

"The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn."  ~Ralph Waldo Emerson Since childhood, walking in the woods has always been a meditative experience that calms my mind while simultaneously heightening my senses to the sights, smells, and sounds unique to woodlands. My home in the Eastern United States is located in the temperate deciduous forest biome. We have four distinct seasons with cool winters, warm summers, and resplendent autumn leaves that fall away only to be replaced with lovely buds and blossoms come spring. Whether or not one lives near a forest, thriving woodlands are essential for the health and well-being of life on earth. Walking along trails surrounded by trees has a way of speaking to the soul that fosters a deeper connection with the natural world.  All of creation is filled with wonders that testify to the glory of God through an abundant display of natural beauty. The forest ecosystem provides natural habitat for various species of trees, plant...

An Absolute Gem!

"In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks." ~John Muir On more than one occasion, my beloved Dad has shared this insightful quote by John Muir, the eloquent Scottish born American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher, and advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the United States. And every time I walk with nature this quote comes to remembrance due to its emphasis on the profound connection between humanity and nature.  Today, I experienced this first hand while driving back roads to avoid heavy highway traffic. Much to my delight, I drove past this lovely nature space called Patuxent Ponds Park located in Odenton, Maryland. The reflection of trees in the pond water beckoned me to come and spend some time with nature. I quickly made a mental note to stop on my way back. Upon arrival, while stepping out of my car, my first thought was, Wow! this place is an absolute gem!  Since I didn't have my journal with me, I made sure to take in a...
